Kandze, The Kandze county capital, is a large provincial town located in the loess hills close to the banks of the Nyag chu (Yalong). The valley is particularly wide here, and the prosperous farming valley which boasts the best barley harvest in the whole of Tibet is set picturesquely below the snow range of Kawalungring. Two of the 5 Hor states, Kangsar and Mazur, were formerly located above the gently sloping plain of Kandze; and since the construction of their castles in the 17th century, the town has been the largest and most important in the Trehorregion. During the 1909-1918 war, the castles were occupied by Chinese garrisons; and today they lie in ruins below Kandze Monastery.
Since 1950 the name Kandze has also been given to the Autonomous Prefecture administered from Dartsedo.
