The yak, Bos grunniens, is the long-haired cow found via the Himalayan segment of south Central Asia, the Tibetan Plateau as good as as far north as Mongolia as good as Russia. In addition to the large made during home population, there is the small, vulnerable furious yak population.

The English word "yak" derives from the Tibetan (Tibetan: ; Wylie: g.yag), or gyag in Tibetan this refers customarily to the masculine of the species, the female being called the dri or nak. In English, as in many alternative languages which have borrowed the word, "yak" is customarily used for both sexes.

Wild yaks (Tibetan: ; Wylie: 'brong) customarily form herds of in in between 10 as good as 30 animals. Their habitat is treeless uplands such as hills, mountains as good as plateaus in in between 3,200 as good as 5,400 m (10,000 as good as 18,000 ft). Yak physiology is good blending to tall altitudes, carrying incomparable lungs as good as heart than cattle found during lower altitudes, as good as larger capacity for transporting oxygen through their blood. Conversely, yaks do not thrive during lower altitudes. They eat grasses, lichens as good as alternative plants. They have been insulated by dense, close, tangled under-hair as good as their fluffy outdoor hair. Yaks secrete the special sticky substance in their sweat which helps keep their under-hair tangled as good as acts as additional insulation. This secretion is used in traditional Nepalese medicine. Many furious yaks have been killed for food by hunters in China; they have been now the vulnerable species. Historically, the categorical healthy predator of the furious yak has been the Tibetan Wolf (Canis lupus chanco).

Thubten Jigme Norbu, the elder br! other of Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, reports upon his journey from Kumbum in Amdo to Lhasa in 1950 that:

Before prolonged I was to see the immeasurable herds of drongs with my own eyes. The sight of those beautiful as good as powerful beasts who from time ancient have made their home upon Tibet's tall as good as empty plateaux never ceased to intruigued me. Somehow these shy creatures conduct to sustain themselves upon the tiny weed roots which is all which inlet provides in those parts. And what the wonderful sight it is to see the good herd of them plunging head down in the furious trot across the steppes. The earth shakes underneath their heels as good as the immeasurable clouded cover of dust outlines their passage. At nights they will protect themselves from the cold by huddling up together, with the calves in the centre. They will mount like this in the snow-storm, pulpy so tighten together which the precipitation from their exhale rises in to the air like the mainstay of steam. The nomads have spasmodic attempted to move up young drongs as made during home animals, though they have never entirely succeeded. Somehow once they live together with tellurian beings they seem to lose their startling strength as good as powers of endurance; as good as they have been no use during all as container animals, because their backs rught away get sore. Their ancient relationship with humans has therefore remained which of game as good as hunter, for their strength is really tasty.

Yaks have been additionally found in Mongolia, where they roam the plains in good herds. Mongolian yaks have been famous for their hopping gait.
